FTSE 100 Rises in Post-Christmas Trading

The FTSE 100 gains 0.2% to 7711 points in post-Christmas trading. Some of the top gainers include technology and retail company Ocado Group, which is up 3.2%. Mining firm Anglo American rises 2.7% after the Times of London reports that it is seeking to partially sell its U.K. mining project, while pest-control firm Rentokil Initial gains 2.5%.

Some of the biggest losers are publishing company Pearson, which is down 1.1%; telecommunication firm Vodafone Group, down 0.6%; and tobacco company Imperial Brands, down 0.5%.

Sterling Trades Flat, U.K. Stocks Climb

Sterling trades flat while the FTSE 100 gains 0.5% on improved risk appetite as markets expect a Bank of England rate cut in the first half of 2024. Markets fully price in a BOE rate cut in May, Refinitiv data show.

GBP/USD trades flat at 1.2725 while EUR/GBP rises 0.1% to last trade at 0.8686.
